Donor: American Legion Auxiliary
About: The American Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) stands as a vital lifeline for ALA members experiencing critical financial difficulties, offering grants of up to $3,000 for those affected by natural disasters or personal financial crises. Established in 1969 through the generous bequest of Helen Colby Small from Burlington, Wisconsin, this program embodies the American Legion Auxiliary’s core principle of “members helping members” during life’s most challenging moments. For over five decades, this fund has distributed more than $6 million to assist over 6,500 members, directly reflecting the organization’s commitment to mutual support and service.
When disaster strikes, the AEF provides immediate emergency assistance to eligible members whose primary residences have been devastated by natural catastrophes such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires, or severe weather events. This support becomes available when members have either suffered damage to their primary residence, been displaced from their homes, or incurred substantial out-of-pocket emergency expenses directly resulting from the disaster. The program’s compassionate approach recognizes the sudden and overwhelming nature of these emergencies, offering financial support when it’s needed most urgently.
Beyond disaster relief, the AEF also extends a helping hand to members experiencing significant financial hardship. When members face critical financial setbacks and have no other readily available resources, the fund can provide temporary assistance to cover past-due expenses related to their primary residence and essential household utilities. This aspect of the program focuses specifically on helping members maintain stable housing and access to basic utilities during periods of financial distress, offering crucial support that helps them work toward reestablishing financial stability and independence.
The application and review process reflects the AEF’s commitment to both accessibility and accountability. All applications undergo a thorough evaluation by the AEF Review Committee, which meets weekly to assess submissions based on demonstrated need and available documentation. The committee typically renders decisions within approximately 14 business days for complete applications containing all necessary supporting materials. This streamlined process ensures that critical assistance reaches members efficiently while maintaining the integrity and sustainability of the fund.
What distinguishes the AEF from many other assistance programs is its focus on maintaining the dignity and privacy of recipients while still providing meaningful support. The confidentiality of all applicants is strictly protected, with application details, reviews, and supporting documents remaining secure within the AEF Grant Committee. At the same time, the program directs payments to service providers such as mortgage companies or utility providers when appropriate, ensuring that assistance is applied directly to the intended purpose while minimizing administrative burdens on members already facing challenging circumstances.
The AEF’s longevity and effectiveness stem directly from the generosity of fellow ALA members and supporters who contribute to sustain this crucial safety net. As an initiative funded entirely through donations rather than membership dues, the program exemplifies the strength of collective action and mutual support within the organization. Members can contribute through direct donations, text-to-give options, or fundraising initiatives organized by local units and departments, creating a sustainable resource that continues to serve the community during times of greatest need.
