About: The Oakland Black Business Fund (OBBF) is a Black-led grantmaking program that provides capital, technical assistance, and growth strategies to Black businesses in Oakland, California. The program was established in response to the disproportionate closure rates of Black businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the long-standing lack of capital access for these businesses. OBBF aims to build economic resilience for Black businesses and position them to attract ongoing funding from government, private, or institutional sources. By focusing on Oakland, the fund seeks to strengthen the local economy by revitalizing Black-owned businesses.

The OBBF offers a unique approach to technical assistance by pairing Black businesses with Black technical assistance providers. These providers, who are also local small business owners, add value to the businesses while earning income from the fund. This approach fosters a sustainable ecosystem of Black businesses, as the technical assistance providers can also apply to the program to stabilize their own businesses.

The primary goal of the OBBF is to ensure that all Black-owned small businesses in Oakland have access to essential technical assistance. The fund connects grantees with a network of core service providers and professional partners to enhance the viability of these businesses. This support is crucial for helping Black entrepreneurs thrive as leaders in the local economy.
