I have seen too many small business owners pour hours into grant essays only to miss the mark because they did not know what judges actually score. The AT&T Small Business Contest is one of those opportunities where the application looks simple - two text boxes, 750 words each - but the selection process is anything but. If you are wondering whether your story has a shot, start with the three hard gates below. Clear those, and you are eligible to enter. The real work begins when you map every paragraph to the rubric. I built this checker to help you see where you stand before you draft a single word. And if the rubric feels opaque, that is exactly where our expert review steps in. Your Grant Assessment fee is non-refundable, but the base assessment fee can be deducted once toward the same grant's Full Application when you choose the optional checkbox at checkout.

Why the Rubric Changes Everything

Most applicants write from the heart and hope for the best. I recommend writing to the rubric. AT&T uses a first panel of marketing professionals and a second panel of industry executives to score every essay on a scale of 0 to 99. There are three equally weighted criteria. To be considered as a finalist, you typically need to average 75 points or higher. That threshold is the invisible gate most entries never see until it is too late.

Alignment with Purpose, Strength of Story, and Community Impact each carry equal weight. Your personal journey, brand aesthetics, or years in business earn zero points unless they connect directly to one of those three criteria. Every paragraph you write should serve one of them. If it does not, cut it. That discipline is what separates finalists from the field.

Eligibility Evolution: What Changed

The most persistent error on third-party sites is that this contest is for women-owned businesses only. That was true in 2023. It is not true now. The 2025 grand prize winner was a husband-and-wife team, and AT&T highlighted that fact in their own announcement. The current rules are gender-neutral. What the rules do require: sole or majority ownership, 50 or fewer employees, US residency, and no affiliation with AT&T or contest partners.
